She packed two suitcases 29.4 and 29.8 kilograms and a spice tin she refused to weigh.

Books chosen by a process of grief. A grandmother’s sari wrapped around a laptop like armour. An umbrella for a country her mother has only seen in dramas.

Five thousand six hundred kilometres, six degrees north to fifty-three.

The journal opens where the journey does: at a door in Colombo, with everything folded.
