Chapter 1

Leaving Colombo

Everything I owned, folded into two suitcases and one decision.

Warm saffron and terracotta abstract of a sun over sea waves, evoking Colombo

This is where the journal begins: the last weeks at home, when leaving was still an idea I could hold at arm's length. The visa letters, the goodbyes I rehearsed and the ones that ambushed me, the impossible arithmetic of packing a whole life into thirty kilograms. I wrote these entries close to the ground — in the kitchen, at Galle Face, in the queue at the bank — because I knew that once I left, memory would start rounding the edges off everything.
